Buffalo Sabres defenseman Matt Hunwick is expected to miss the entire 2019-20 campaign due to a neck condition, the team said Wednesday.
The announcement comes about two weeks before the Sabres start training camp.
“After further medical evaluation this offseason, we unfortunately do not expect that Matt will be physically able to play this upcoming season due to a neck condition,” Buffalo general manager Jason Botterill said in a statement.
Hunwick was limited to 14 games last season — recording two assists — due neck and other injuries. He initially hurt his neck while training for the 2018-19 season.
Hunwick is slated to earn $1.75 million this season in the final campaign of a three-year, $6.75 million deal.
The 34-year-old Hunwick has 119 career points (25 goals, 94 assists) in 535 career games over 12 NHL seasons. He has also played for the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins, along with the Sabres.
